Drown is a verb

I
let
you
sink
in
to

when your arms give out
and your legs kick wide
and your eyes ask me

if this is what you had planned

why the sunscreen, why the goggles
why the well-balanced meals
why the eight o’clock bed time and
why ever even get cranky with me at all.

.

you cry and shake and say you thought
you were going to die and I say no
that wasn’t death that was drowning
it’s what we do when there’s no one around to lift us up and out of the water.
