creatures like you

creatures like you

i see my first-ever blackburnian-
my whole flesh piques. leaves loosen, some
hang like cocoons, they spin on my eyes axis.

i make out the blank from the asters.
female yellow-breasted chats
double-take in a pecan.

the place fills up with chickadees, who
remember your eyelashes were like a
girls when you thought hard, or
looked down to read.

lady redstarts disappear into hickory
where a blue-edged all around orange and
brown butterfly rotates a half circle, free
of concern as you are now. my thoughts are
the urn in which such creatures sleep.

Confessions of a Speed Bump

I’m not here to stop you,
just slow you down.

Peace At the Beginning

Boy sleep
quiets the house.

Dryer click and song
frame the stillness.

Monday waits
in mystery.

Five o’clock bullfrog

       Five o’clock bullfrog
sings to God and other frogs
       I am somebody.

75 lbs., wit of a heavyweight

a muumuu

hangs on the back of her door
all red and black
with that fierce dazzling mandala
right in the center
a gift from our neighbor, jessica
who insists EVERYONE needs

a muumuu

it’ll never fit her
25, and the same size she was
at 13

while making a deposit at the bank
i get a text that reads

“Mumu Down fell in Bella’s water it’s Really Hawaiian now”

Dog Brain

These perforations line all the soft parts of my body

A perfect guide to spilling my soil back into this earth

And is it possible to be two places at once?

One is sprouting with the trees so peacefully

and the other is hiding in my closet praying that no one speaks to me

And if I had just paid more attention in school, maybe I could decode this dog brain of mine

Someone tell me why the sunset ahead looks so beautiful, but when I look in the rear view mirror, I can still see the night sky cursing me
