The Right Word

Intemperance believed choice was
Simple

Until consequences and age
Finally matched stride

Twain illustrated the importance of lightning
And the bug

But the echos of thunder are what live
immortal

The crack that comes after the heat
of blinded rage

Lonely Reflections At 32

You have to do something to distinguish yourself.
It’s unfair.
Some people don’t have to do anything, truly.
But this life is about what you can do for somebody,
Not who you are.
A time of immediate pleasure and reward.
Not one of validation.
Yourself is the only place to store an investment,
Absolutely positive no other hands are attempting to steal you.
In uncertainty, the heart will play.
We are at the mercy of other’s intent.
We should appreciate ourselves more.
We’re the only reliance we can ensure in this life.
It was always going to be lonely.

Wildflower

“Wild flowers, they keep living
while they’re just standing still.”
    —P!nk, Cover Me In Sunshine

I think I thought if I just hold still, my life
will catch back up to me and all the missing links
will slide like so mang bangles down a thin
and delicate arm. And so I held, for a year
or more. And I waited for the love of my life
to realize his place in all this and catch on up
to me, catch on up. I waited on couches,
hot and forthcoming. I waited next to walls,
as they held rooms in which I stared blindly.
I waited near the rain, it dripping at various
speeds. I waited in my car, in my clothes for any
light to change. I waited at the ocean, I waited
in the redwoods, I waited at the river,
the gardens, the hills of my campus. I even
waited as I cried, hot blind tears at various
speeds, their wild hues iridescent and alive,
as they danced alone in every type of light.

Word River

Round and round
the story goes
and the river of words
flows and flows
toward those
who stand
in its way.

October Moon

slight shapes with beguile,
I fight sleep like a child

I love a cloudy night,
the moonlight, so bright

in a clearing, for awhile,
a lone star shines a smile

the rain, out of sight,
a crisp breathe, a delight

Homegoing Meditation

The baby bird still

too still: I sit and sit, just sit

in July’s mowed grass almost breeze

with my Why.

Swastika

He shared how freshman year his unchosen college roommate
tacked that flag above hi s bed glaring across the dorm room.
He was able to switch roommates and leave that hate filled room.

His story brought tears to my eyes and angst to my heart.
He shared his Hillel bagels and lox brunches with me
He welcomed me to his world for two years.

I saw how hate worked and how resilience won out
Sadly we parted ways at graduation coming from
two different worlds. He could not leave his tribe.

VIII. Strength

The maiden gently closes
the mouth of a lion
as if it were
but a house cat.

Her peace and fortitude earned
through the trials of her journey
as she climbed
the mountain of initiation.

The maiden knows
her strength comes
from a divine Source
as Infinity swirls
over her flower-crowned head.

Praise

Creator-

This sunrise takes me to Yourself-
Verdant Eden gold bird song Dew,
Bloodsap births ripe radiant Leaf,
Brimful praise giveth the silver Weed,
Pierces like as a first promise Blue–

To Adam every cow and bird and mouse. Named
New, and Yourself, and Of God.

This new sunlight has no name but God.
