Reoccurring dream

Wide awake riddled with fear
boom boom
boom boom
The sound of her heart beating fills the air
boom boom
boom boom
Marching soliders two by two
a voice yells but not a sound is heard
frozen in the moment
frozen in fear
why does this keep happening
scream now scream loud
not a sound escapes not one is heard
her voice has no sound stolen by the fear
boom boom
boom boom
All she can hear.
It really doesnt make any sense at all
Now she is rolling and rolling
down the hill
looking back the soliders are gone
and really this can’t be
She ‘s being chased by giant  rolls of  white TP

Palisades

(Jack Teal’s son
takes me canoeing
at Camp Nelson)

great blue heron
king fisher
mrytle warblers diving for insects

limestone outcropings
shaped into figures
that occupy my watery dreams

sitting still on the water
i see the yard of an abandoned house:
daylilies hold on

(thanks, Jack JR)

Secrets Saved

Those profound summer rains
have abandoned me when I needed them most,
the purring asphalt cushioning our steps
deliver clarity with their tufts of mist.
Others argue that summer should
remain blazing, relentless, and remorseless,
that anything less would be any other season
filled with progressions and depressions,

the ups and downs of our spinning ball of madness.
Summer’s heat is no less necessary
than the night we need to sleep it off.
I only wish
that so many of my favorite patterns of this season
were not secrets saved
for the brave,
the mad,
or the creative
after the rest of the world has gone inside.
We need those secrets again.

observation vs. reality

if a Black woman falls down in the middle of her life
and no one is around to hear her, does she actually
make a sound?

do you even care?

Streets Away

You said you’d always be there

That you’d answer any time I call

That you’d have my back when things get too heavy

But you showed me that The floor is the only thing always there for me

Your name is gravity

Cause you’re always bringing me down.

You always flake when I try to come around

Time after time you’ve left me to drown

In these thoughts in my head that you used to help get out

I guess I’ll  walk in circles

I guess I’ll count to 10

I guess I’ll write my thoughts in a book and sulk through the pen

I guess I’ll slowly unwind

And talk my shit online

Lets just hope I don’t hurt myself like I did that one time

I’ll let the fuse keep burning

I guess I’ll be fine

After all I’ve made it this far

When I’ve always felt like dying

I was

Lying, lying with you

Now I’m Lying, lying to you

When you ask if I still love you

Even though  you know I do

Now I’m lying on the floor ,

Just lying

Necessary

The dog adds necessary noise to our home,

the clink of her collar,

the squeak of a pink tennis ball,

paws scuffling on wooden floors,

playful growls,

sincere barks,

the peaceful snores that accompany

puppy dreams.

She vacuums up her dinner.

She gnaws on her chew bone.

She whines for more tummy rubs.

She clanks her paw against

the bars of her crate.

Her presence is a comfort to us.

We are not alone in this fragile love.

Fear

Fear creeps in on little cat feet,
but swipes at you with claws,
gnaws at your guts,
and settles like dust
in all your cracks and crevices
to fill you up.

Bump in the Night

Airplane engine
Lawn mower snores
Whistle-pitched sirens
A lonely mewl

Untitled

My nights filled with heat

My mornings filled with fury

A lightness to lift

The heaviness of my mind

The Endless Battle of What to Eat

Make sure you eat 80-100 grams of protein a day
Okay, can you give me some examples?
And go easy on the carbs
I always have toast for breakfast
Energy drinks are bad, stick to coffee
Yeah, I can do that
But milk isn’t good for you: oat, almond, 2%
So I can only put sugar in it?
Well you should lay off sugar,
Makes your face look puffy
Oh, and milk is a good source of protein

Take it easy on the salt and the grease
You’ll never lose weight if you eat fast food
And don’t eat your food too fast,
It’ll be harder to digest
I
haven’t had any greens today
Make sure you eat lots of fruits and veggies
But be careful, fruit has a lot of sugar

Count your calories, every meal, every day
Be on a calorie deficit
Skip the bun, the croutons, the cheese
A side salad instead of fries
Also, make sure you get 10,000 steps a day
And a 30 minute workout
Okay, I might have time before work
Dont forget to stretch!

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day
I think I have enough time for cereal
Too much sugar, I’ll wait until lunch
Chicken is great protein,
But make sure it’s grilled and not marinated
Make sure you get fat-free ranch
Drink a gallon of water
What if I want a coke to drink?
Make it a Coke Zero

I just got off, what’s still open?
Taco Bell and McDonald’s
Oh, I guess I’ll just wait until breakfast
But, all I have is toast

Guess I’ll see you at lunch then
