Hot Cocoa and Ice Cream
It is chocolatey, it is warm, brown with white specks, it is Hot Cocoa with marsh-mellows!
“Why do we only have this treat in the winter?” you ask,
when nobody responds you give up on the attempt of
asking someone and try to figure it out by
yourself.
After a couple minutes of staring into space you actually start to think about it.
You think “Well why do we have ice cream in the summer?”
Then you notice that it is really just the opposite.
Then you think why is it the opposite?
Then you tell yourself “When it is hot we have something cold. When it is cold we have something hot.”
You wonder “Why is that so?” You’re afraid you will never know.

By the way I do know the answer.
Which season do guys like better why, which treat do you like better Hot Cocoa or Ice cream why
Love the way you take us through your questions!
I prefer hot chocolate, and in the gathering cold of the Fall (also my favorite season). I think it’s how you can “locate” the warmth as it goes from mouth, to throat, and then fills your belly 💙. Calming. Comforting.
Can’t wait to read more of your pieces this year!
Questions are at the heart of many good poems! I love ice cream all year round, as you know. Hot cocoa, though, is for a special time of year. Right around Christmas or when it snows. Good work! I’m proud of you for writing again this year!
This really got me thinking!! I love the way you describe hot chocolate!! Makes me want some ASAP! But I’m a weirdo and I drink hot tea/ coffee during the summertime. I say sit in front of a fan and drink your hot cocoa!
I do love this poem. I prefer salty/savory foods over sweet, but if I had to choose between the options you present, ice cream wins (even in the winter!).
Your questions are superb.
I like to think of wanting the opposite as trying to create a balance. Thank you for posing these questions!
Have you ever had frozen hot chocolate? That’s one of our summer favorites from Lakeside!
Ice cream all year, hot cocoa mostly around Christmas! Love your curious mind.
That last line is very good.
It’s so important to ask a lot of questions and also to think through answers ourselves!
I love both treats and refuse to choose between them. Never settle.🍦☕️
Thanks for sharing your poem!
Questions are a good way to approach a poem
Yes, Susan and Abra, I was thinking balance. When we are cold we seek warmth. When we are hot…well…I want to jump in a swimming pool. Nice poem Abra!
Ice cream in winter so I can eat it slow.
Love your questions, Abra, and your pondering the answers. So glad you’re joining us to write!
Great questions
You are exactly right! I had not thought of it that way. Thanks for sharing!
