Nicholas Brothers
Lovely flash dancing brothers, sleek skin
& wavy hair, grace that white stage
with leaps, splits, twists, coat tails
streaming, torsos coasting together, then
apart on that slick surface, coming up
from splits as if pulled by a string,
what magic you wove
with sinew & strength
in the madhouse of a country
afire with noose & torch
& frost-ridden faces lined
by midnight shadows.
~Brothers Fayard & Harold, 1914-2006 & 1921-2000, respectively, who became well-known during the Harlem Renaissance for their unique style of dancing, known as “flash dancing”

They were incredible dancers, but marked by so much prejudice. You really capture them and the times.
Thank you!
wonderful poem about such talented men. Thank you.
Thanks for the nudge to look them up again. Beautiful poem.
Nice poem, T.M.! You write so well about dancing – the words and rhythm are perfect.
I especially like “torsos coasting together” and “frost-ridden faces” and the context of the last two lines.
Thanks, everyone!
I can see these men in action from your images! Now, I want to know more about them.
I was hoping to spark someone’s interest in them–I went to Wikipedia for details.
