Small Is Beautiful
Running across
a railway overpass
in full sun,
I startled a mouse.
With no hesitation,
he took a hard right
and ran top speed off
the side of the bridge,
clearing it by two feet,
plunked on the tracks,
and, slightly shocked,
walked away.

All living things really are miraculous, aren’t they? I love the word “plunked” and how this little guy makes the leap seem easy.
Lovely observation.
I love how the mouse goes from being “startled” and how “with no hesitation / he took a hard right” to then just walking all that off in the end, it was great to read!
Such a sweet take. I love when you say “I startled a mouse!” Because not all of us would focus so lovingly on the mouse! Your word choice was intentional and fun to read. I really enjoyed this!
Did you feel the magic of a creature that could make a life saving jump from a point from which we might break our neck?
Loved it. Thanks for sharing.
You are a wonderful storyteller (and observer!).
This is a beautiful moment, rendered with such concise detail.
Nice!
I love this little snapshot of what all creatures – us included – have the instinct and will to do…save ourselves! Could just see that mouse walking unsteadily away!
Such a nice, specific observation!
Great imagery. & observation.
