Day off dream
A rusty can of earthworms and grass
Pried open edges like teeth on top
Fish bait and fresh promises
I see a kitchen table’s dark and dawn
I see a placemat flat as offered tongue
You see a rusty can of worms and grass
You see a rusty can of worms and grass
Edges on top like stars and jagged teeth
Fish bait, question and judgment
Hover over hearth and home
Hover over hearth and home
I feel the hook strike and know the power
You smell the whorls and banks of the river
You smell the whorls and banks of the river

love how the fish gets the last line
Placemat flat as an offered tongue…..That’s brilliant!
This poem is sharp like the rusty can; you really nailed the sound and feel with great economy of words (which my comment doesn’t do!!)…
