You know you’re at the beach when
you put on your bathing suit
as soon as you wake up
the mockingbird in the palm tree sings
without pausing for breath
lizards darting across your path
stop to give you a wink
each wave kisses you tenderly
even ones that knock you down
the sun is a warm handshake,
a mantle across your shoulders
the ocean in motion’s a lullaby
and you rest easy in the womb
every pedestrian shell on the shore
is a singular masterpiece
all is forgiven, including yourself,
repentance not required

Yes yes
Every shell, a masterpiece ….
(I need to get to the beach soon …)

This is a beautiful unraveling of what it means to be present and soulful, seen through beach imagery.
Lovely.
Love this Mike. Perfect.
what is it about a beach day that gives such a feeling of well-being?
Mike – Each couplet here is a poem in itself! What a wonderful in-the-moment experience, vicariously for us at home. My favorite – each wave kisses you tenderly/even ones that knock you down.
The sun, the waves, the shells – all of it – nature washes away transgression. At least for awhile. Amen.
Love this. Excellent use of couplets.
