Swim
I ran along my usual route and managed to hold my breath when I
passed the cemetery–
I wonder how those pre-Civil War souls rest as we passersby shake the ground with our heavy steps?
I kicked dust and watched it rise in slow motion to greet the heat
the humidity pushed forward, extended its hand to guide me but
it sucked the breathable oxygen from my lungs,
pulled me with the might of an unexpected riptide and
pretended to invite me for a swim in the air while
pulled me with the might of an unexpected riptide and
pretended to invite me for a swim in the air while
I gasped, gulped, and nearly drowned below the might of an unexpected heatwave

Interesting the musing of running and pre-Civil wars souls!
Thanks! I pass an old family cemetery along the route. Literally 5 ft. from the footpath. Most of the graves pre-date the Civil War. It’s eerie and cool.
