fixing fried green tomatoes in the air fryer
I know,
they’re not like mamaw used to make
or like mine, when I mixed
the requisite bacon grease
with the spirit of my ancestors, and
they’re not like the ones at that
new shiny food truck downtown
or thick-sliced restaurant ones
on the ‘whistle stop’ burgers
they’re just adequate, tangy,
with that sight crunch from
the cornmeal coating,
a throwback to days gone by
and all I know is that we,
and probably mamaw if she were here,
call it pretty tasty

Wow-
the requisite bacon grease
with the spirit of my ancestors,
This poem is an inspiration ! The “bacon grease” and the spirits of your ancestors adds so much to it’s dimension—-and the inclusion of mamas’ name though out holds it together. And since you are talking about an air dryer —I may just try this as my first thing—have yet to try anything. Thanks for you poem!

I clicked the comment button to note these amazing lines and see that the prior two commentors did the same already. These really sang out! The next anthology should be called “Bacon Grease and the Spirit of My Ancestors” accordingly. Listening, LexPoMo? I dare you to find a better title.
Well done!!! 🙂
Wow, what a compliment. Thanks Steve!
