Writing Day
Time to start over with a clean ledger,
mark columns of numbers
neatly zero out last month’s balance.
Clear,
concise,
captured.
Black marks etched in linen paper
the way my typewriter used to do,
duck,
dodge
to the edge,
and when the bell rings, the fighter
comes out of his corner to box again.
I write checks, letters, lists.
I invoice the minutes of my day
in one tenth increments,
divide days by descimal points.
Today’s a writing day
when I write to you,
the first of the month of June.

So good to read your work again, Alissa! It’s going to be a good month.
Thank you. Looking forward to this month. Reading, writing, yeah baby!
when the bell rings, the fighter
comes out of his corner to box again- wow!
so much power in this phrase- pulls me in to the struggle
See you next weekend!
Must echo that fighter line. Being able to be a part of this wonderful event again certainly has a rejuvenating effect. Favorite time of year, captured well in this poem. Happy LexPoMo 2023!
Thank you! and the bell rings!
Happy Lexpomo!!
Yea!
Love this one! Do you compose on a typewriter? That ding at the end of a line–I could hear that one! Loved how it led you to a boxing ring.
I haven’t had a typewriter for a long time. I used to have old underwood. I swear a tornado couldn’t pick it up!
