Donkey Basketball (the Rondine)
Keep from falling – dribble, shot, score, and pet
burro bareback balancing act barrage
straw, nips, opponate, and manuer dodge
played to support returned Vietnam Vet
Minor distraction moment to forget
comical efforts – the ball to dislodge
Keep from falling.
Emotional healing ousting regret
unlikely combinations rare hodge-podge
belonging and winning – again in charge
a way to say thanks, repaying our debt.
keep from falling.

One of the funniest most entertaining and uplifting events I ever attended were donkey basketball games that my father participated in. These games (with divisions and a championship recognition by the way) were created to allow the disabled Vet a way to play a competitive sport without the need for legs. Even with the stale hardware store popcorn for refreshment these times are still remembered with a smile. I hope you enjoy my attempt to capture the moments.
Should have said some of … not one of…
Enjoyed it especially after you gave the context.
Dana – The title drew me in, and I enjoyed the rhythm. Fun to read again after your extra info. I never heard of such a thing! Glad you have such good memories of it, and thanks for sharing them with us!
