Falling Asleep With Anne Beattie, Waking Up With John Updike
this is no fiction
for good or ill
bose headphones
have become a go-to
sleeping pill
no more melatonin
wrap the ears with cushy
foam and like childhood’s
Wonderland or Grimm
the new yorker fiction pod
makes the world go away
love like lightning
affairs blazing/burning out
houses with rooms painted white
…and dreamland appears
alice munro raymond carver
murakami david foster wallace
eudora welty
whistle into both ears
a loaded shot gun of stories
that kills insomnia

Your sharing.
Love it, Jim! I keep falling asleep to books on tape and then have to go back and find the spot just before I nodded off…
Until next year!
like childhood’s
Wonderland or Grimm
especially love the link to bedtime stories
I could munch all day on “no more melatonin/wrap the ears with cushy/foam and like childhood’s/Wonderland or Grimm”! What a satisfyingly crunch stanza!
*crunchy
Jim, I will miss your poetic voice until next year. Thank you for how much you share in LePoMo. Thank you for your encouragement and support. I love this poem and I think the title is deilcious.
Oh like this poem so much and I forget about books on podcast! I am still old school and liked driving with my cd player/books on tape. Need to listen books via podcast
Delightful poem ! See you next June!
Incredibly well done. Love where you’ve chosen to break the lines, and that list of writers you offer, too. Have a great rest of your summer, Jim. Until next time.
Your storytelling and eye for scene and movement has been a highlight this month. Looking forward to reading more Jim Lally poems soon.
Love you and your work, Jim.
