Embarrassment, Ennui, Anxiety
The three emotions aligned with puberty.
EMBARRASSMENT
i endured the daily skank eye by 3 cheerleader types
checking me out from hair to shoes, my hair greasy
and stringy. Difficult to schedule my shower living
with 6 others. Too naive and too poor to know the styles.
ENNUI
Never suffered boredom!
Had my bike, my miniature Schnauzer, Fritz and
my beloved books.
ANXIETY
Had my share of that wanting to fit in.
Once I tried out for cheerleading
thinking I could be one of “them”.
Failed miserably with uncoordinated
moves and leaps out of sync.
Am left handed and footed.
Found my niche in English lit
and French where I was a geek.

Great ending!
Thx Melva!
Great poem, Linda. Some compelling moments.
Thx Linda,
Agree with Linda – we can all relate to this, and your poem brings back the memories, and the understanding we can show for young folks.
Adolescence is very difficult.
Geeks are the best!
Yes!
Your bike, dogs & books
3 escapes from the 3 emotions.
Yep for sure
Exactly!
Linda, I love this! So relatable, probably because I work with middle schoolers…
It’s like a story, in that I can picture the ups and downs you’re describing having experienced.
Thanks!
You capture this well and tell these stories precisely, with humor and an open heart.
Thanks, Shaun!
Clever and witty. Pictured each moment. Love these snapshots.
