My Knee Replacement
I think of a young Ernest Hemingway
radiant in his hospital bed
the lionhearted warrior
flirting with the nurses
there for the adventure–
more material for his writing life.
Nothing old and defeated in this picture
the eagle temporarily grounded
with merely an injured wing.
Greeted everywhere with warm eyes
and smiles, he’ll come back
stronger than ever and the cane
just makes him look more heroic.

There is incredible strength in being able to take significant challenges like surgery in stride. Hemingway sets a good example.
Wonderful, Pat!
Btw you gave a fantastic reading at Luigart the other day!
Thanks so much! It was fun!
I especially relate to “more material for his writing life”
A great visualization for your recovery!
This is wonderful, Pat. I agree with Gaby about the writing material!
I love how your title interacts with the poem, and “the eagle temporarily grounded” yes, yes
