Solitaire
gives my mind space to breathe,
the meditation of shuffling,
the cards slick and sharp-edged
against my finger tips,
the acute focus on a simple thing
takes me back to childhood
sitting in a circle on the floor
knees touching, totally engrossed
in all that mattered–
the game in front of us.

Love this, Pat – especially how you end it. (And I’m still a solitaire nut, just like I was as a child.)
Beautiful–so visual. I’m still a solitaire fanatic, but on an app. This brings back that tactile feeling and the carefreeness of childhood so well.
You’re the second Lexpomo poet this month—the other is Philip Corley—who has written about Solitaire in a way that makes me want to learn it. It’s on my list.
I recommend it A vacation for your mind
I love how you take us from the tactile present of the cards to the past. Enjoy “the acute focus on a simple thing”
Thanks Shaun
Our family has also enjoyed playing cards over the years. This was a lovely reflection. Nice writing, Pat.
