Russian Dolls
your thoughtful quiet locked within
six matryoshka dolls,
your curiosity creeps sweetly out
with a speech unable of
your surface like stone blown smooth
against Siberian shores,
your warm hunger kept by waiting
for table to be set.
my son drew eyeballs in every corner
and wall of his bedroom
at the age of three,
and we laughed asking why?
my beautiful son said he was scared
at night and they helped him
fall asleep so was it
all right? sure it was all right.
one august ninth I was asked to leave,
thinking it would be all right.
all right, and we didn’t hug and kiss
until next winter, the first shell
had fallen tight, I saw it in his painted eyes—

captures a really delicate mood.
(v. effective form!-can feel the dolls turning, trying to align/ make sense)
Thank you Dustin Woo Hoo ❤️
lovely and heart breaking. the son’s painted eyes — what a detail.
❤️
Very well done! I agree with Dustin about the form and it showing the dolls trying to make sense. The image of your son drawing eyeballs in ever corner of the room is so personal! Russian dolls in a good symbol for the poem. Well done!
I once learned of a phenomena about poetry readers – they interpret a piece based on when they expect to see a certain thing. I named the poem Russian Dolls, yes: to describe my son’s many layers of protective armor, not the form of the couplets. My thought was to create something of a call and response, almost a song. The interesting thing? People draw their own meaning, their own tidbits and layers that I never intended. That is kind of cool.
Thank you Lindy Lou Who. ❤️
Yes I love that kind of thing. I love how you shift to the Russian dolls and somehow we make an association.
Well, aren’t I a hoity toity Little Lord Fauntleroy this A.M.? Sheesh. My gratitude. I’m gonna shut up and eat my biscuits.
What’s been said, man. But this one manages to feel both incredibly vulnerable yet hold a certain distance and sadness at the same time. Very very well done, and thank you for sharing it with us.
that little man and I are trying to find each other again
Thank you Joseph ❤️
Wonderful poem. These poignant, focused poems about your children are some of your best work.
