Assateague Beach
1
the wind in your face
the breath of the Atlantic
gives you mouth to mouth
2
a gull fights the breeze
hovers just above your head
a kite on a string
3
the sound of the waves
thunders over & over
there is nothing else
4
the ocean wants us
the undertow pulls us in
the sirens calling
5
footprints in the sand
the tide erases them all
we were never here

I love the “linked” haikus. It just keeps building. This works on many levels!
Thanks darlin!
I like the numberedness in this sequence. Feels like steps.
Happy June Mr Nance Nance.
And we’re off!
I fixed that name thing. It was bugging the hell out of me.
Mouth to mouth—it does give you life. Shelley’s west wind come alive.
I love this cycle of haiku, each a wave that builds on the others
Thanks, Shaun! It’s good to see you back on here! Looking forward to reading your work.
We have already started calling you Kevin Nance-Nance.
C’est moi!
THAT’S the guy. Love this one.
I love Assateague Beach. This has perfect imagery to capture that place. It’s beautiful and haunting at the same time
Thanks! It really is an amazing place, ain’t it? I thought about including a haiku about the famous horses but realized I didn’t care that much about them. The real action—or nonaction—is right there on the seashore.
Perfectly wrought, Kevin. You’re a master of the form.
Thanks, Bill!
Yet more proof that disciplined form and reverie can live in the same poem. Beautiful job, Kevin. You have such command of the haiku.
Thanks, Lee!
What others have said, and really appreciate the final stanza.
Thanks, Joseph!
That first stanza made me take a deep breath. Incredible, Kevin!
Thanks, Morgan!
love “the breath of the atlantic / gives you mouth to mouth”
Thanks, River!
I liked the gull like a kite on a string – they do sometimes just seem to hang there.
Ending is a strong reminder.
Thanks Wayne!
Really lovely – the pull of the ocean and the pull of desire.
Thanks Alissa!
You are definitely the King of Haiku. A true art form. Love it.
Thanks Wendy! See you this week in class!
Lovely haiku series!
Thanks Chelsie!
Love these linked images! Great form.
Thanks Linda!
Kevin, you haven’t lost your touch! The brevity of the haiku points out just how small we are compared to nature.
Thanks, Sylvia!
A strong and resonating piece Kevin! The power of the sea is eternal. I will definitely be reading this one again.
Thanks Jeremy!
I’m curious about your writing process here, Kevin. Did you draft the numbered sections as a sequence? Etc.
Well yes and no, Nettie. I wrote all but one of the haiku when I was at the beach. I thought of them as a suite but not in this sequence. I put them in this order just recently.
This fills my haiku heart. ❤️
Thanks, Patti!
You give nature form,
wind and ocean come alive—
Walking us through, Kevin.
We—Author, reader—
appearing, then vanishing:
together, then gone.
Thanks, Bud! Love your haiku!
Beautiful and haunting at the same time. Bravo!
Thanks Karen!
Love the linked haiku!
especially like 1 and 4
