Wildflowers
spring is slow to warm this year,
so the wildflowers sleep a bit longer.
they fight the urge to crack themselves open;
they resist the temptation
to peek through the soil’s soft surface,
to stretch for the sun,
to sway in a whispering wind,
because–
they know
they cannot be tamed.

Very nice! I enjoyed your poem.
Thank you, John. The warmth is supposed to arrive this week in New York. Let’s hope…at least for the wildflowers’ sake.
You are welcome and I hope so.
My tulips only endured one week, and then turned brown. Your words flow down the page like a small stream.
Oh, no. That’s such a bummer about the tulips.
Thank you for reading.
Love the imagery of the flowers sleeping in and not wanting to wake up just yet
Thanks, N.D.
Spring has been cold for us this year.
Love the shaping and the content.
This works so good.
Thanks, Coleman!
I hope the warmth will find us up north soon. I saw your poem about the cicadas. I miss their musical quality. It’s not really late spring/summer without that symphony.
I love this, but (selfishly?) as a metaphor for living
Arwen— ooooh! I like your interpretation WAAAAAY better than the poem’s literal subject. Thanks for reading. : )
My pleasure! I like it more each time I read it – resisting the urge to stretch is so relatable even though (in both cases) it’s only a matter of time lol
Oh, absolutely! Stretching is essential. I, too, can only resist it for so long. : )
Awesome. Great free form, and I love how lend human emotion to the flowers — a metaphor for own struggles.
Thank you, Lee! I’m glad you enjoyed it.
I like the wildflowers independence and autonomy in this piece!
Thanks, jstpoetry. Me, too. This one wrote itself today. Thank you for reading.
Love everything about this but the placement on the page most of all. Like two seams, no zipper, and the space between.
Thanks, Joseph. Glad you liked it.
I love the blooming of form, too!
Thanks, Shaun!
Love the imagery and use of form that gave the poem more power.
Thank you, Linda. 💜
Love the visual aspect of this. Can see the flowers slowly rising, peeking through, stretching – untamed.
Thanks, C.A.– We hope to see them bloom this week. Thanks for reading.
I love the spacing here and s versus t sounds–they really add to the push and pull of the wildflowers waking up!
Thank you for reading and for your kind words, Maira. Much appreciated!
