The Road to Enlightenment
was paved over the “good people”
& sure they are pissed
the branches of their lairs crowded
by highways that curve too close
their ring forts bulldozed
leaving sheep and crops to fate
once cozy underground tunnels
out of plain sight
for 3000 years of safe keeping
now torn apart by tractors
like three-day-old bundt cakes
tossed aside by progress
& wouldn’t you know
“rare microclimates” started causing
sudden hailstorms sliding cars
off the blacktop & into the past

Love love three day old bundt cake! Last couplet is all that.
Thanks, Bill.
Wonderful! The simile “like three-day-old bundt cakes / tossed aside by progress” got to me. It’s all so visceral.
Thanks for reading, Michele.
This is a powerful little poem! I admire the breadth of the poem. It does so much in a relatively small space. Well done!
Last thing we need is the faerie folk against us, right? 🙂
Form is great and also love the 3 day old Bundt cakes. Tone is great.
Thank you, Linda.
