Blue Heron
A slate blue heron above
the expressway, huge wings
lumbering beyond the airport,
onward against a ruffling wind.
Just a snapshot, all granduer,
purpose in his silver ascent.
Then, he’s gliding up, pressing
to merge with the dingy sky.

Really nice! Strong concise way of conjuring the scene.
Thank you!
I may have seen the same heron in the neighborhood. Before I knew it, he’d flown over me; I saw him from the back, but could tell it was a heron from the gliding and the curve of his neck. Wondered why he was away from water. I especially love “against the ruffling wind”
I had the same question! He looked so out of place, but that stirred something in my heart. I love birds.
