To be Read
read me like an old love letter
let the worn page rest like silk in your hands
close your eyes and recite each line from memory
let each whispered word become a cherished recollection
brush your fingers along the carefully crafted contents
and etch your response in invisible ink
in the lines above
or below
or beside
the original message
press the page to your chest
let your lungs fill with breath
exhale when you think you’ve read enough
and read it again (and again)
like you did the last time,
when it was a tender memory of the first time in your hands

Beautiful and tender and does exactly what it intends. I read it three times. Great poem.
Thanks, Coleman. I’m glad you enjoyed this one.
What an effective metaphor! The repetition works well…can feel it.
Thank you, Bud!
I love this conflation of a love letter and the person who wrote it. Sensual & stirring.
Thank you, Kevin. I’m glad you like it. Thanks for reading.
And you just described the power of words if you open yourself to them.
Absolutely! Thanks, Lee.
How sexy it is to be annotated by the right reader! Love this.
No doubt, Austen. Thanks for reading!
Beautiful. I especially like the last two lines.
Thank you, Tom. It’s funny, I had a few different iterations of the last line in particular. I’m glad you liked it. Thanks for reading.
I love the meta detail of the poem itself becoming the love letter!
Thank you, Shaun! I wasn’t sure if that was made clear. Thanks for reading.
