Shipmates
Not quite mates of the soul–
but more ship beyond friend–
we were a crew of two traversing unknown seas,
never daring to choose a port or flag;
in this memory, I love you like the ocean loves the shore—a crashing drink of water,
though never the same again.

Lovely! Great imagery and emotion! I especially like the phrase “more ship beyond friend.” So telling (and uniquely so) of this relationship.
Thanks, Michele! I like that line too. I write a lot of poetry about non-relationships or mislabeled ones, and it’s always nice to hear when it resonates. Appreciate it.
Love this! Such clever word play on an emotional topic.
Thank you! It took a while to title this one for that reason. So many emotions and subtext.
