Apology
I say sorry
It rolls off my tongue
I say it more than my name
It sits behind my teeth
Ready to soothe
Aloe to the burn I didn’t inflict
Apologies are comfortable
They fit well in my mouth
My lips curling around the syllabus
I spew sorry
Water from a fire hydrant
To extinguish discomfort
To make you feel better
Because the root of the problem
Is that I
Am the flaw

Great!!! I relate to this a lot.
Love that line I spew sorry.
And, I say it more than my name. As a woman, I know “sorry” is always on the tip of my tongue to say— so sorry—even if I slightly bump into someone accidentally in the grocery store! This poem and it’s poem & its imagery prompted me to think about apolgies—whether they ring hallow or true.
love the fire hydrant analogy
