A Message For My Past Self
Passion is powerful and all-consuming.
Deep love is wonderful and abiding.
But alone these are insufficient.
Should you try to pretend otherwise, you will fall.
You will fall into years of quiet heartache.
Months where you try to exhaust yourself before bed,
staying up later,
and later,
distracting yourself
in every waking moment,
terrified of what you will face
alone,
in the dark,
with your thoughts.
Because you know.
You know the truth.
Deep inside you,
you know the truth:
Being in love is not enough.

The last line leaves me questioning: then what is enough? Very thought provoking piece!
Really uses language well to explain turmoil. I related to this poem.
Impressive writing. Placement of your words on the page lead the reader through the poem. The space between words and lines provide a silence, a musical rest in your composition. Poem challenges the reader with final line, attention drawn to its italics, as to what is enough in love. One perspective is to give oneself to love completely, to live love, or from a place of love. Rather than pleasure or one’s well being, for love to be enough, one must be mindful of own thoughts and awareness. At any rate, many thanks for this multi-layered poem. With deep gratitude
Thanks all! And thanks L. for the musings. Appreciate your reflections and thoughts on this piece, and what is means to love. You hit the nail on the head on this one.
