the strawberry
beneath their green umbrellas
strawberries ripen
tender sweet jewels
a temptation for paws and snouts
the rabbit’s quick nibble
the groundhog’s leisurely feast
the dog’s determined delight
my own breakfast
will know its juicy abundance
in due course

What a sweet poem! I live the images and the delightful elements of strawberries you include. 🍓

I love the way you describe the tops: green umbrellas
Scrumptious from top to bottom!
you know your critters (“leisurely feat”: I’ve watched the groundhog hunker down and take a good long while to eat a sunflower stalk and all) and how to describe them with precision (“nibble”)
There are some wonderful images here, and a good message about patience and serenity with how unbothered the narrator is that other creatures are eating the quite literal fruit of their labor.
Perfect! Reminds me of grandpas garden.
an ode to strawberries!
