Solace for One Taken Young
There’s nothing to fear
when the sun sets,
it’s simply bringing
its daily dose of light
to children
on the other side of the world
besides
all things are sun-made
its atoms keenly sprinkled
from firefly to cinder spark,
it glows from the windows
of stark houses and the lamps of cars,
why even the gravestone
at your head
casts a long shadow
over these my sleepless nights.

Bill, such a gorgeous and poignant poem! I love the form, too. The crispness keeps the message clear and fresh.
“all things are sun-made
its atoms keenly sprinkled
from firefly to cinder spark,”
Wow! Excellent write!
Ending with the gravestone balances out the light. I love this poem’s minimalist approach.
Wow, Bill. Tender and emotional. The title adds to the weight of this poem. Just… wow.
This poem has facets that are beautiful to look at individually, and even better when viewed as a whole. I especially like.

Love the title. The shaping is sublime and it’s just so poignantand beautiful.
This,
“all things are sun-made
its atoms keenly sprinkled
from firefly to cinder spark,
it glows”
Oh my.
my heart ached when I read this line:
“why even the gravestone
at your head
casts a long shadow
over these my sleepless nights.”
The ending tore me all the way down.
so poignant- I agree with others about the atoms keenly sprinkled from firefly to cinder spark line!
This poem reminds me of something I was thinking about the other day, the old physics rule about energy, first law of thermodynamics. You’ve got all this energy changing form!
Even the gut-punch conclusion speaks to the laws of physics intersecting with the human condition. Thank you so much for this beautiful poem.
This is exactly what the title says it is: solace, comfort, wise words for difficult times.
It hurts and helps to read. Lovely work.
Beautiful. There’s so much compassion and love in this poem.
The direct and reassuring way you open this piece give the reader a sense of comfort. You powerfully redefines solace here, and it resonates.
Such comfort brought with your words: “its daily dose of light
to children/on the other side of the world”
Such a thoughtful and generous sentiment.
Felt as if I was rolling the earth, following the sun as your words progressed into various settings.
