Seizing the Center
The
longer I live
is the further I seek
for the realities that bind
all of us–is the deeper I learn
what characteristics about
myself are bad for
the world–
is the clearer I recognize
there
will
always
be one
or two more
confessions to make
but that’s okay because
even the grand masters of
chess know how winning often begs
several small sacrifices of self.

Love how the shape of this poem builds the cadence and image and then narrows and builds again to a stunning ending:
“even the grand masters of
chess know how winning often begs
several small sacrifices of self.”
I love the poem’s shape! It amplifies the idea of the sacrifices of self needed to win.
Deceptively deep in concrete form…..this is brilliant.
That the pawn might be overlooked but oh ! The power.
Yes. Brilliant.
A wonderful poem, and I agree about the shape. I like the softness of the poem’s movement, sort of a gentle wave coming to shore then leaving.
I love the form and clear-eyed reflection.
Shape draws my eye to the center, reflecting the title. Gutsy inventory of authentic self-discovery, P.C. Connects personally. Admirable writing
When I see a shape poem, I immediately assume it is forced;
this one did NOT feel that way for a heartbeat, PC. Message and image perfectly melded and strong close!
Finely done, man. *claps!*
Perfect title, as well.
And that close truly is landed perfectly.
