Does the body sense time running out?
Both my dad and my husband began a frenetic flurry
of adventures, trips, family get togethers before…
they even knew they had a death sentence.
As if the body knew time was running out.
their zest wore us out keeping up with their pace
Dad had two years to fight his cancer leaving us at 73.
Jim had two weeks to fight his cancer leaving us at 68.
Wish I had one more day to love on them.

A lot of wisdom here, Linda. Bless your heart.
Thanks, Kevin
Yes. Your poem glows with the truth of grief and honesty.
I love poems that leave me pondering. This poem makes me wonder – is this frenzy of preparing for death a reflection of the nesting frezy we mammals experience prior to giving birth? The young and their m.others are completely “together,” so I believe they perceive the pre-birth frenzy. I find this makes me consider if frenzy is a pair of bookends.
Thank you for this philosophical start to my day.
I’ll miss your daily poems. 💙
Thank you for your comments. You may be right about the bookend idea, our bodies sometimes are ahead of our brains.
Thoughtful questions–and the love shines on and shines through.
Outside the poem’s context, this is a scary thought as I’m feeling frenetic 🙂
Thank you, Linda, for this thoughtful, considerate offering today. I have no answers to your questions, though love radiates from your heartfelt, affective writing. It hits home.
Very nice, Linda, and a powerfully felt ending!
I like the question in the title and the answer I sense in “before…/they even knew they had a death sentence./As if the body knew time was running out./their zest wore us out keeping up with their pace” (Well done these two men of yours!)
and I really feel that last line “Wish I had one more day to love on them.”
Thanks for all of your comments. It’s something I saw in both men after the fact and I often wondered if their bodies were prepping them.
An excellent question, and a reminder that each day is its own life, and should be lived fully.
Yes! So true!
