What do you make of this?
I caught myself
scanning for likes today,
swiping my life
up and down with a careless finger,
mindlessly pursuing the dopamine
of your good opinion.
It makes me feel all
thumbs down emoji,
all purple shirt and palm to face.
It makes my face blush
crayon yellow with a river of vomit
gushing green. It also
makes me face
the grinning-turd-pile irony
of the question with which I am
semi-consciously engaged—
what shall I write
to make you like my poem?

An honest poem about a serious and uncomfortable topic that I think most of us are just now beginning to recognize and confront. Thanks for this conversation starter.

Thanks, Kevin! It’s hard (impossible?) not to bump up against this if you want to share your work in this world.
Gorgeous! And messy- all those emotional images, so visceral.
💯
Thank you, Michele! I’m so happy to see you on here!

💖LOVE this. A powerful kick off to the month. 💥💥💥
🥼🧪🔍So smart to use the language of emojis to create imagery.
📖💙🌌The need to be seen is so Universal. We get it. ☺️

Thank you for all your kind words and marvelous emojis!
your ironic self-awareness speaks to us all
Thank you so much, Gaby! I’m glad I’m not the only one thinking and feeling this stuff.
It makes me feel all thumbs down emoji. Very enjoyable
Awww thank you! A thumbs up to your kind compliment!
I really enjoyed this–and agreed. That part of sharing writing that is personal ain’t easy!
Thanks, Shaun! It’s definitely a weird space to be leaning into.
To like or not to like be dammed– keep writing with those words that make us feel…
Thank you so much, Rudy!
This is such a different type of poem for you–brava for trying something new! (I need to do more of that). And I love the way you relate media “likes” with poem “likes” at the end.
Oh my, I’m so sorry. I had the wrong poet. But I do love your poem!
Haha, no worries at all! And thank you!
