I Am Trying to Summon the Courage to End Something Beautiful
I think we’re done. Sometimes brevity
is part of the gift. The perfect meal,
if you eat too long, becomes
an ailment. The best vacations
are the ones that end just before
they cease to nourish.
We have been an adventure
for a time, an unbidden generosity,
campfires and crag days, such
a kind surprise, but your destination
has always differed from mine. I need to pull
my hand free. Our paths ought to split
here in this clearing,
where we are still astonished
by how much goodness
there has been.

Phew, I love this so much, Lisa!!! You convey that back and forth feeling of “is this really the end” going from a question to a statement of acceptance. It’s so hard to let go of things that have brought good, even if we know they’re not meant for us moving forward. <3 Hoping to see you at Poezia next week!
Thank you so much, Sara! (Or does your name have an ‘h’?) I’m planning to be at poezia and look forward to seeing you there!
So good. Sad but clear-.headed. An ode to moving on.
Kevin’s comment nails it: an ode to moving on!
the poem gives with largesse
There is a lyricism to your words, as if singing a song. Ending as the path splits, while there is still goodness adds to its beauty.

I like the word astonished associated with a break up. Still finding wonder in what was good.
God i love this. This is so amazing.
Beautiful! Love this “courage to end something beautiful”, to preserve the love and wonder while it still exists. I felt a tone of rich maturity, but deep sadness still.
