Magnifying Bookmarks
I almost lost my vision once
before y’all knew me, before
prescription bifocals. Years after
I dreamed that in all my childhood
photos, I had a third eye–
and no one acted any different.
Now I need a few strong
magnifying bookmarks.
Vision spots and dark drifts
are less trouble these days,
but who likes to read poetry
outloud with their faces
in the pages? I’m sure
you can buy in bulk:
I see my eye doctor
next Monday and
will follow up with with y’all
when I return from Costco.

Nice poem! Here’s what you need: one quirky detail, some local color and a great question. 5
who likes to read poetry/outloud with their faces/in the pages
Thank you!
I just realized this one will be fun to perform, and that I could include the formula you discovered.
What lovely rhythm this one has, looking forward to the post Costco follow up!
Thank you!
(I’m happy to be a member of a pretty nifty place to shop at with owners who seem to be on the right side of history.)
Oh, how I empathize with this poem. It drew me in at the first line.
Our eyesight is so precious.
Thank you for your comment. Wishing you blessings for all the senses.
You know I still love the third eye bit 😉
YAY!!!
And yes– that was an actual dream. It was my first night in California for a low-residency PhD in Depth Psychology (that I failed out of).
I slept where monks once slept.
Love the term “magnifying bookmarks.” Also agree it’s a great one to read since it allows you space to put your face in the page. Then you need a big smile after that line! Third eye is fun.
Thank you.
Fun observations. Hopefully I’ll be getting (or giving) magnifying bookmarks for the winter holidays now.
Or with every book launch here on out. Lol.
I love the movement here and “I had a third eye–/and no one acted any different” yes
Second draft introduced the memory of that third eye dream!
Third draft (read outloud) clarified it.
And this part is a big deal: our school pictures were given as Christmas gifts to family who then displayed them in their homes.
My psyche said my third eye made no difference in being seen and accepted.
I love the image of the third eye.
Thank you. I really do, too.
It’s not prominent in my profile, but I’ve read Tarot and Tea Leaves for 15+ years!
Grew up blessed to be encouraged to respect the role of intuition in my life and others’!
funny image of reading poetry aloud with your face in the pages
I’ve done it. Quite the image!
Awesome title and nice reveal.
I love the third eye image.
