Becoming
fear & shame live
in hot pursuit of my heart
they duck in dark alleyways
shadowed in timecapsuled truths
and wait…
for me to bare the thought
of letting go, loosening my grip
on the crumbling edge of knowing
what I was and what I am are always what I will be
becoming isn’t a choice

I’ve become such a huge fan of poems without resolution.
Thanks. I sort of like the idea of the unknown. It’s the beauty and despair in the possibility of every day. Thanks for reading!
The unknown touches us every second of every day. Well done, H.A.
It sure does. Thanks, for reading, John!
this poem clears
The mind somehow.
something about the

Becoming.

Thanks, Coleman. Like yesterday, I had a completely different poem in mind. Then I took the dog outside and the muggy air held something else for me. Thanks for reading and sharing such kind words.
Soul searching hits us at the strangest times! Turning that into poetry saves on therapy bills and delights the reader!
Amen! Glad you liked this one, Sylvia.
I like how you search with an honest eye in your poems. This one is brilliant in its couplets and placement of “and wait…”
Thanks, Pam. I appreciate your kind words and that you see the honesty in my writing.
It’s a great poem, H.A., though I stubbornly continue to hope that becoming can be a choice. I need it to be.
Thanks, Lee. Hope is always a good thing. I definitely support you there! I appreciate your kind words about this poem.
Title is threshold to authenticity, for we are always on the edge, becoming anew every moment. “becoming isn’t a choice.”
Thanks, l.! Yes, becoming just seems to happen whether we want it to or not. Existing is such a weird concept.
It’s true that fear and maybe shame are hard to shake. I remember one of the exercises growing out of Cheryl Sandburg’s Lean in was to answer the question: What would you do if you weren’t afraid?
Thank you you, Gaby! The question has endless possibilities for answers from so many of us, I bet. 💜
Shew. So much truth in “what I was and what I am are always what I will be/becoming isn’t a choice”
Thank you, Shaun! I always appreciate your thoughtful reads.
Becoming is the final step to being, H. A. and the ultimate goal we hope to reach…
It certainly is. Thank you for reading, Rudy!
