Free for the Taking
When we first got together
we’d get in the old honda
drive, just drive
sometimes we’d keep going
sleep in the car
shooting stars
windows down, hair blowing
blasts of rock n’ roll
drive, just drive
headlights gleaming
shiny spoons at the diner
sunlight beaming off chrome
not aware of cages back then
keep driving, change the station
we thought we were free
on the open road
wildfires now spark the city
rule of law broken
like a yardstick

I really love what you did here!
On freedom on youth on aging on awareness and the modern condition and justice and the….. ok anyway….. love it!
And xouplets just sayin.
So much packed into this small poem. I love how you shape that youthful feeling and let us see the perspective shifts as time passes and as the world around the couple changes. Great write!
I love, just loved those road trips
“not aware of cages back then” — isn’t that the truth! Also love the repetition of “drive, just drive”.
I echo the comments before me.
Love: ” sunlight beaming off chrome”, “not aware of cages”, and how “drive, just drive” powers the poem
Shew! “rule of law broken/like a yardstick”
So much freedom in this piece.
“drive, just drive” in uncaged youth!
Love “shiny spoons at the diner/ sunlight beaming off chrome” and “rule of law broken/ like a yardstick.”
That ending brings this high-flying poem back to earth with a terrifying crash.
Wonderful memory of that time on the “open road” and the thrill of “just driving”! And then time comes along . . .
Yes, “just driving” is the way it is. The stops along the way, the destination unclear, all of it sails right on.
The vibes and choices are excellent. I love the sounds and space around “sleep in the car
shooting stars”
I can see the road and feel the freedom, right there with you.
