The Jubilee of Dementia
Sad to find out who I was
I’d had high hopes for me
I didn’t change the course of rivers
Treasures I collected turned to dust
All my goals were rabbit holes
The medal round my neck, an albatross
Answers still blow in the wind
but now they have no words
I must have lived another’s life
Regardless, all will be discharged in bankruptcy

I appreciate the heavier (I think) than your usual irony and love your characteristic ruefulness.
Here did she fall a tear. Here in this place
I’ll set a bank of rue, sour herb of grace.
Rue even for ruth here shortly shall be seen
In the remembrance of a weeping queen.
–GARDENER: Richard II, Act 3, Scene 4
Thanks for sharing those lines from Richard II
A silver lining in everything, eh Mike? 😏
“Regardless, all will be discharged in bankruptcy ” is sad but true. Thanks for sharing this one.
First off, the title is hilarious Love the nods to Coleridge and Dylan. You’re good at grabbing truth by the throat and bouncing it around a bit.
Dementia is a subject of great interest to me. It runs in my family and I’ve also dealt with it with clients. I’ve written a story, several poems, and a novel (unpublished) with dementia themes. It also relates to my interest in dream poems because both involve how a mind puts a world together.
