A Little Early in the Summer
I wake up in a teacher nightmare
I’ve been reassigned
The assignment is to a different school
A different content
Each class a different part of the building
The number of students multiplying exponentially
Not being told until the morning of the first day of school
Just wandering around the building trying to figure out where the free-range children are.
Its June. Sheesh.

This poem speaks to me – as a 31-year teacher, I can say the ‘school anxiety dream’ phenomenon is real. You portray it here realistically and with a strong, frustrated voice. Love the last line.
Ty! I am at year 25 but in a new spot in my career. I feel like a newbie all over again.
I haven’t taught a regular class in many moons—still have these dreams from time to time.
Laughed out loud when I read “trying to figure out where the free-range children are.” 😂
Oh no! The dreams continue??? Hah.
