Anyhow
I’d be lying
if I said
I don’t mind
getting old,
but I’d also
be remiss
not to mention
certain benefits,
like the bar set so low
for how I look
because really,
who gives
a flying
rat’s ass?
These days
I’m all about
inner beauty
anyhow,
don’t you know.

Lovely! Feels like a throwback to the Ferlinghetti/Ginsberg City Lights era stuff. I’m here for it.
Thanks, Bernard! That’s a great compliment.
Nice shaping.
Fun message.
And I can very much hear your voice
in this one.
Big half-toothless smiles your way
It’s nice, ain’t it Coleman, to reach this rat’s ass stage of life? 😏
I’m with you here,
I’m wondering if this is one
of the great forms you use,
or one of your own invention?
I just made it up, Jim, with a lot of trial and error.
Yes to inner beauty.
Yes!
I like your made up form! I love how it looks on the page. It looks formal but shines with an irreverent message.
Thanks, Linda! At first it was all over the page, a la cummings, but I couldn’t stand the sloppiness and brought it back to this petals-on-a-stem kind of thingy.
The form makes this poem. Makes us slow down and ponder the words!
Thanks Linda!
Your witticism and rhythm is always great! That’s especially true here.
Thanks, Maira!
Indeed! Me too!
Thanks, Pat!
i love this form, how it enacts the back and forth of deliberation
Thanks, River. I hadn’t thought of this, at least not consciously, but now that you say it—
I love where this poem goes,
and how it gets there.
Thanks Nancy!
That form is so intriguing, it kind of make my eyes go wonky. I might have to steal it.
I’m pretty sure I’ve entered the “not giving a rat’s ass” phase prematurely. I’m afraid to ask “Where do we go from here?”
Thanks Karen! Feel free to steal it.
Love it! Coming strong with the message!
Thanks, Bill!
Ditto with the “love this form.” Name it fast! (Nance’s Deliberate Lines? I read River’s astute comment.) I’ll be trying it out soon.
As for theme–it should always be about inner beauty, right?! But it’s easy for a handsome gent to play around with this idea.
I enjoyed this! Great title, too.
Thanks, Michele! For everything 😏
Especially like that you call the form “petals on a stem.” Nice image for the up-yours material.
Thanks Libby!
