Astilbe
For Isaac
“Division is recommended”
– Almanac.com
Stature isn’t everything
but if one of us leans
a head on a shoulder
you’ve overtaken me.
I still remember you
twenty-one inches,
in my arms, amid the night
cholic & crying
til I carried you
outside, under the stars—
the way you peered
silently into the sky.
For seven weeks
I’ve been lost
& you’ve been wise
words & strong shoulders,
holding my forty-three
years & change.
Gone for the summer, but
you’ll return
& one day soon you’ll go,
for the good
of a separate life.
Please
know your goat’s beard
dad will always be
proud
of today
of tomorrow
& here for you.

This is a touching tribute that really catches the depths of the speakers feelings. I really like the opening line!
Thank you, JST

Oh golly. I wish I’d had a father who could express this level of love. Beautiful.

I was lucky to have an amazing dad. I can only try to pass that legacy.
Lovely poem, Joseph, I’m sure he must be proud.

Whether he is or not, I am!

These teen years are tough on a soul, and you are remaining present and grateful, so kudos!
Right? And then the ones where they fly out if the nest. I’m not ready!
Such a touching, loving poem!
Thank you, Linda 💙
Listen Joseph. I would type more words but I am literally crying right now. This is the most touching thing I’ve read in a long time. Happy Father’s Day!
Thank you 😭💙

Joseph – What better gift for a father than a loved/loving child!

Thank you, H.A.
They make it easy (most of the time 😂), don’t they?
I bet they do. I see it in all my nieces and nephews. They light up their parents’ worlds as well as mine. 💜
The nurturing of the son to the father – turned from father to son. Touches me with my boys now asking – are you ok mom?
Awww! She’s okay, she’s okay 😂
Thank you!
