BLM also at the Farmer’s Market
Too early for cucumber,
I found pickles instead and
tote
my bunches
of radishes and
candy onions.
The chocolate zucchini bread
and the pina colada one (both small) are new indulgences.
As I leave I consider what else I didn’t find.
No notable people of color present. I would’ve bought from them.
I do not recollect if they were among the crowd, but as a giver
of tarot and tea readings and vendor of my book, I love to look over
who I buy from, who is casting their kindness, who
I would trust with my future when I give to theirs.
The crops rotate and yet the earth still grows some Strange Fruit.

The Marketing Manager and the President of our Farmer’s Market have released a thoughtful statement about the cultural revolution that is Black Lives Matter.
I am grateful to see their stance and their acknowledgment of agriculture and black experiences.
I think, too, of how the Farmer’s Market is something not all of us can or do attend. In some cases, it can feel like a status symbol — at least it certainly is uncharted, perhaps difficult-to-access territory for a lot of people from disadvantaged backgrounds.
<3 <3 If you go this weekend, won't you please give mental or actual SAFE air kisses to the market as a whole for me (I often work in my cheese shop every weekend)!?
Thanks.
*I meant to convey that *a* Farmer’s Market can be difficult for some people to physically get to, not always ours in particular.
True observation that commercial interaction goes deeper than exchanging money for goods.
i think subversion is needed in order for societal concerns to meld into our cultural imaginations… so i propose we tell opposers it means Bacon Lettuce & ‘Maters then spring the truth on them when they least expect.
Is it possible to set up your booth to sell your garden wares and not be pleasant? Must not be for that is the main reason i love a Farmer’s Market or stand or sign by the road. It always means someone will smile a warming smile.
Y’all! Thank you for these comments. /grin
