COMPARTMENTALIZING
Everyone who could
Said she looked like old money
She had
In fact
Been raised with the understanding
That money was not to be discussed
In public
Attention must not be brought
To what one had
So as not to make others
Feel uncomfortable.
If someone came to their home
And, say, ate peas with their knife
Then that is what they were to do
So as not to embarrass the guest
It was so important that others
Not feel inferior or sad
Because of them
And yet
In their home
They were made to feel both
Inferior
And sad
And left for dead.
