Departures
Nouns will go first—
titles, for
example—
Tess of the d’Urbervilles
will fail
to arrive on your
tongue, though
you might envision
a dark
red straw-
berry
or a monolith
of Stonehenge.
Thomas Hardy will go next.
You will not
recall the words
azalea
or rhododendron.
Eventually
you will not remember
your name.
Even grace
will abandon you.

Strong ending – even grace will abandon you.
Yes, very strong ending. A great poem!
Nettie, just this afternoon I was struggling to remember YOUR name to tell another poet! LOL
What a coincidence, Pauletta.
“Ouch!” Too close to home!
Wow – you’ve hit the watchamacallit on the head!
Ominous and beautiful, or is this beautiful and ominous?
This takes me to my mother who has dementia, the “things” she’s lost, and yes, even grace for having to live this wordless, disconnected life. Thanks for this one.
