Dolphus Raymond
pretends he’s a drunk,
staggers through town with that brown
paper bag, bottle
of cola concealed, imbibes
only the sweet fizz of love.

Wonderful tanka, Chelsie!
Lovely to see you at Poezia!
Thank you! Yes, nice to meet in real life!
Oh? I didn’t know this Poezia thing was a Thing! I just looked it up. Dang. I wish I’d known about it when I lived in Lexington. Is there an email list to keep in touch about when it’s happening? I come back every few months to visit friends. And I also have friends who write locally who would, I’m sure, love to go!
It was my first time, so I’m no expert, but there is a Facebook page for it.
Yes, love how your poem begs so much curiosity and opens up worlds of wondering and story.
Dolphus Raymond is a minor character in To Kill a Mockingbird that I’ve always loved.
I need to give him and To Kill A Mockingbird a revisit, thanks to your poem. 🙂
Oh that sweet of love!
I meant “that sweet fizz of love.” I still haven’t had coffee.🙃
wow a tanka portrait
from TKAM, no less
Excellent! Such a great character — and wonderful poem.
