Double Shot
Afternoon coffee is a different addiction.
Less hopeful, more settled.
Like we’ve accepted the world is hard
but still need to make it through.
I find the sunshine suspicious.
The lift of school children’s laughter at odds
with the smoke & muster
of a 3pm cappuccino.
I’m already awake.
Where more can this jolt take me?

I love how afternoon coffee becomes suspect in your poem.
“Like we’ve accepted the world is hard but still need to make it through”
How true! How universally felt! And well captured, especially in that closing question. I love this.
Every line is so true. I love how the sunshine and children’s laughter contrast with mid-day exhaustion.
This is one strong brew!
Incredible parallels.
If it were possible, I would very much love to have this roast on hand at home. Even if the daily “jolt” might be a bit tough to swallow.

“The smoke & muster” is fabulous! Love these lines and how they circle back to the title. So good.
Thanks!! I also love the smoke & muster… it just tumbled out (while drinking a cappuccino of course). This poem was heavily researched. 😉
What a great subject for a poem. I love the following:
