Eternity Diner
Let us share this slice of pie together
at the long linoleum counter
with the chrome napkin dispensers
and stools that let you pretend
that you’re your own planet,
and forget that the cantankerous bus
is arriving any minute to take you away
or even notice that the coffee
has no chance of growing cold
for the refills are free,
and they keep coming,
and coming.

This brings to mind the Nighthawks painting. Very nice.
You set the scene well, Bill.
This:
“and stools that let you pretend
that you’re your own planet,”
Pure magic. I love it.
This somewhat minimalist but also cinematic. I totally see this scene! To me, the words “cantankerous bus” are the center of the piece. The title is perfect!
Yep to what H.A. and Linda said.
love: stools that let you pretend/that you’re your own planet,/and forget that the cantankerous bus
Love the concept AND the execution. Well done.
and stools that let you pretend
that you’re your own planet…. dude I love where you took this!!
Yes to all of the above!
The cups are large also. I really like this poem. Such a (re-) capturing.
I agree with the rest. The idea of Nighthawks and this meta(physical) diner where “stools that let you pretend/that you’re your own planet” is rather mystical and magical.
To be in the moment, “ forget that the cantankerous bus/is arriving any minute to take you away.” Love this well-crafted poem, Bill, and agree with Shaun.
I love “cantankerous bus”! I can hear the vehicle clanking and groaning. Mysterious place – should be in the Twilight Zone!
