Feast of the Sacred Heart
As children we took for granted the image
Of a heart in flames, crowned with thorns,
Art expressing devotion,
A holy card holding
My place in a prayer book, once offering
Comfort vivid in expression. But
Heart remains how we describe that rare form
Of love. Beyond emotion as
Flames burn away
Ego, thorns pierce illusions to
See self challenged to will
Another’s good, sacrifice comfort
In circled motion.
Fueling a trinity
Of endless gift, to create anew wherever
Sacred emerges from ordinary
Living, and makes possible the naming of
Heart, this love’s ocean.

What a beautiful devotion to the Sacred Heart. I love how you described the components of the image, and gave each spiritual purpose as teachers. Love!
Thanks, Manny–trying a more overtly “religious” poem (at least in topic) is a risk. I appreciate your take on it.
Even though this last line has spilled over from the others, I found it beautiful in its isolation, too:
“Heart, this love’s ocean.”

Don’t know if it was by intention but I read from single phrase to single phrase alone after reading the entire poem and found another!
A holy card holding
Flames burn away
Fueling a trinity
Pam, I had a fleeting idea of this after I finished the poem, but honestly did not pay much attention. Thanks for pointing out that happy accident.
