Going Under
Unless you are personally being abused,
immersing your mind and heart
in the hatred of others
and mocking/celebrating
the death
of another
living
entity
however corrupt the system
is choosing
to be part of that system
climbing into a
submersible
to its dark,
wet,
demise.

oosh! Good poem, man!
billionaires
ain’t necessarily as smart
as they thought
they WERE
I agree. People are being awfully ghoulish about that submarine.
Great poem!
Oof, felt that in my gut. Thank you for the reminder in this gem of a poem.
Will reply later: FYI, I’m not above my own recrimination here. There are those I wouldn’t mourn much if they disappeared.
But the desensitization and laughter over the loss of life gets to me.
There was a kid on that submersible too. Spoiled and rich too? Maybe. But who are we to devalue life of any kind?
BOOM
Yesterday I began to wonder
wonder what the mother of that boy was feeling,
what hope all their loved ones
were holding on to.
I feel compassion for those –
those who don’t know
are fearing alone – with money or not.
love how you used white space to simulate being submerged
👏
It’s inspiring that you wrote a poem about this. I was not really aware what people were saying about it because I am soooooo far off of social media. I was just reading about the event for the first time today. Thinking how it’s so crazy the way the ocean is so deep, that even with tons of specialized equipment in a site that seems somewhat frequently visited (therefore mapped) that this was like a needle in a haystack. Even though they picked up the sound of them signaling. Whoa, just terrifying. One day any one of us might become indescribably rich. I hope my life will still have value if such a curse befalls me.
Re read again a little bit later, and I gotta make sure I iterate this, it’s a really good poem
Very thought provoking!
Thank you, everybody.
I was encouraged to see more and more people speaking up about it as the day moved on (both here and across the web).
Jerielle— agreed! Despite all we do know about the oceans, we know more about our solar system than we do certain reaches of our own planet. No wonder the gods and mythology of coastal and especially island nations through history were so very dark in nature.
And Dana: Precisely 😞
Thank you, All, for your replies.
Such an incredible, poignant piece.

This whole thing, people’s responses, juxtaposed with the loss of the immigrant boat, has been quite the reminder of humanity’s shortcomings. The orcas should probably go ahead and take over, to be honest. Sigh.
Word!
