Gold on Gold
Golden boy has golden teeth
and golden throat. His clothes
are gold–same as his eyes.
He matches with gold
on the apps (his golden fingers work
his golden phone) and he turns gold down
for you. Gold for dessert first,
then dinner. Gold with a side
of fries–gold and salty and
glistening. Picture it–his golden
hair that still winds itself
round your fingers, your tongue.
Mouths frozen by gold.
Mouths locked in gold. Gold as far
as you can see: golden light
that becomes a mirror. Golden
boy that becomes a reflection–
gold on gold on gold.

VERY cool 😎 I really love how this builds on itself as it goes. The rhythm and pacing are fantastic. I learn so much from your work!
Favorite lines-
“Mouths frozen by gold.
Mouth’s locked in gold.”
Thanks, Leah! I feel like I learn from LexPoMo each year and appreciate the kind words.
A lot of the repetition here comes from a poem by Kaveh Akbar that I can’t seem to shake: Orchids Are Sprouting From the Floorboards
Well crafted and timely!
Thank you, Mary Allen!
“and he turns gold down for you” was so arresting — it felt like affection. Not sure if that was intended but PHEW. Love this piece.
I’m glad that came through! Thank you, Susanna!
Wow, Shaun! Great use of the repetition, skillfully, to tell this story of an encounter…
love this piece…… repetition as ping pong orchestra
