Good Faith
I’ve sent these daily poems
and you’ve responded with
an iPhone heart to each.
I never know what it was
that you loved, if you have
a favorite word or line–
if you ever clicked the link
at all, what you honestly
think of poetry. You’re
a very busy business woman: but
please say something once or twice,
tell me quickly if you want me to stop,
say something if you’ve read this far.

Oof I feel this. Sharing something creative with people that sometimes just do not get it is such a hard feeling.
Right?
It’s not obvious what to say. But my favorite response yet to all these poems was after the third one or so:
“I’m a guy. You lost me at the first two lines.”
We laughed about it and I wrote the muse poem, which was just so fun.
Yeah, there does tend to be a distinct lack of comments on creative works today. On the one hand, I get as a reader how hard it can be sometimes to translate the feelings a work invoked into words, but on the other hand… as a fellow writer it can get disheartening to never hear a response.
Indeed, indeed.
Poetry and writing are probably the toughest things to respond to.
I feel this as writer, and as a reader, I’m trying to “say something” each day. I like how the syntax of the last stanza sounds like a little like work email the speaker has composed in her head.
