Gran’s Handmade Quilts
On cold winter nights in Appalachia
the featherbed helped keep me warm
covered in quilts handmade by Gran
her work of art in true mountain form.
When warmth from the fire had gone
and the cookstove cinders burned out
cold from outside entered the house
as the wintertime wind moved about.
Because of Gran’s handcrafted quilts
and the softness of a goose feather bed
on winter nights I’d always stay warm
with love in each patch by hand and thread.

Oh one hundred percent true!!
How lucky are we to have such heirlooms. And what a well-designed poem:
Your own warm quilt, crafted from words. Yes!
Thank you, Tabitha.
Beautiful imagery! This is a poem that allows the reader to feel the love of a grandmother. Well done!
Thank you, Jazmine, lots of good memories!
Rereading your posts and saw I missed commenting on this one!
Love the sound and rhythm in: “patch by hand and thread.”
I grew up in a house heated by a coal furnance. A different kind of cold, yes? Much like your “wintertime wind moved about.” (love the Ws sound).
Yes Pam, you are correct. Thank you for commenting. Many young people today have so much, but yet, they have missed out on so much. I would not trade those special days.
